(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For at least another couple of months, motorists could still wind up with tickets from a red light camera at a much-trafficked intersection in west suburban Oakbrook Terrace.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has wanted the red light cameras at 22nd Street and Route 83 in Oakbrook Terrace to be removed since spring 2021.

IDOT contended the suburb has not submitted required reports on the safety effectiveness of the cameras.

Oakbrook Terrace has challenged the order in court. It countered that after IDOT approved the red light cameras, which began operating five years ago, it cannot tell the suburb to take them down.

This week, DuPage County Judge Craig Belford continued the matter to mid-December.

In continuing the case, the cameras on southbound Route 83 and eastbound 22nd Street will continue to snap away at motorists who blow red lights.
