(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County’s juvenile detention facility will be offering a new enrichment program in the early evenings for young people being housed there.

Until recently, bedtime at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center was 7 p.m. -- way earlier than teenagers are used to retiring. Dr. Miquel Lewis, acting director of the Juvenile Probation Department, says the new program will give young detainees something to do.

New programming will include discussion groups that emphasize social and emotional wellness and community, he said.

There will also be classes in yoga and the Brazilian self-defense art of Capoeira, which incorporates dance and music.

No, Lewis says, officials are not teaching the teens to be aggressive. Martial arts are about discipline and character, he said.

Bedtime is now 9:45 p.m.

“We want to prove them with opportunities for movement – also with opportunities for breathing and meditation and for reflection,” Lewis said.
