KANE COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Kane County is considering low-cost euthanasia for pets.

The county's Animal Control Executive Director Brett Youngsteadt raised the issue during a County Board committee meeting.

He said people who adopted dogs during the pandemic are calling daily.

Their dogs are not socialized. He said the department is seeing it become a big issue, with bites increasing.

"It's not something people want to do. It's something people have to do…It's a sensitive topic, I know that," Yongsteadt said.

"I also feel that if you're going to do it, you do it right. We won't offer ashes back. You won't be able to stay with your animal."

He suggested charging $100. He noted the service can cost up to $500 at a veterinarian's office. He added there would be a vetting process that would determine whether a dog should be put down.

The meeting got a little emotional.

"Do you have parameters on your euthanasia? Can you prevent someone who's just tired of their dog from coming in and asking you to kill it? One woman asked, fighting back tears?

Youngsteadt said they have a right to refuse anyone.

This was just a discussion, and no action was taken at the meeting.
