The Kane County Sheriff says new data proves that reforms are working…and making people safer.
Sheriff Ron Hain said in 2019, the Kane County Jail had an average daily population of more than 500 inmates. Now, that number hovers around 325.
Hain said a prioritization on jail reform has helped change people and, in turn, reduced overall crime numbers in the county. In fact, data released by the sheriff's office shows a 60% drop in crime county-wide, a 35% reduction in jail violence and close to $5 million in taxpayer savings.
Among the changes Hayne is highlighting vocational training and job placement programs, new intensive addiction treatment plan and racial justice reforms.
