KANE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group that helps abused and neglected children in Kane County is making an urgent appeal for volunteers to deal with a rising number of cases.

Jim Di Ciaula runs the Court Appointed Special Advocates program in Kane County's family court, which assigns volunteers to help abused and neglected children get the medical, mental health and other support services they need.

He said since the start of the COVID pandemic, the number of cases of abused or neglected children in Kane County has more than doubled.

"We need to make sure that every child is well taken care of and that we're advocating on their behalf. Between the decline in volunteerism and the increase in cases, that's what's driving the need."

Di Ciaula emphasized the need for more volunteers to help those children.

"When they're in a house where they've experienced abuse or neglect, their childhood is dramatically impacted by what their experiences are. It's an opportunity to change a child's trajectory and their life."
