KANE COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain says Illinois' bail reform is to blame for new, 'incredibly unfortunate' public safety data.
The Kane County Sheriff's Office Thursday presented data showing an uptick in both jail population and arrest warrants.
Hain attributed the increase to overall Pretrial Fairness Act and its SAFE-T Act, which eliminated cash bail.
“The PFA [ Pretrial Fairness Act] wraps certain conditions around people,” Hain said. “The judges have to put certain conditions around people, if they violate those conditions they come right back into custody.
“We have very little time, under the PFA while they’re in custody, to really get our hooks into them, to really go through our program and to go through our reentry process. It’s just a constant revolving door now of people in custody for seven or less days.”
Hain said that if the jail population continues in the direction it has been going, there could be an increase of around $2.5 million in incarceration costs alone.
