KANKAKEE COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Kankakee County Sheriff’s sergeant joined citizens to rescue a dog that was struggling after breaking through ice Monday.
The dog went through the ice on a small pond and was about 20-to-30 feet from shore. Body camera video showed Sgt. Russell Belcher unwinding a rope and tossing the spool onto the ice.
The idea was for the dog to grab the spool and get pulled to safety. No such luck.
A man then showed up with a metal rowboat in his pick-up. The rope was attached to the boat. The man then slid out onto the ice in the boat, grabbed the dog and got him to safety.
The pitbull named Zeus was dried off. He was cold but fine.
