Kankakee High School teacher fired for calling student a racial slur

KANKAKEE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A teacher at Kankakee High School has been fired after he was caught on video calling one of his students the N-word in class.

The algebra teacher John Donovan was recorded by a student using a cellphone. The video caused outrage. He was kicking sophomore Michael Nelson out of class.

“He called me a n******,” Nelson told CBS-2.

He said he complied, walking out of the classroom.

“There’s no excuse for saying a racial slur, especially to a 15-year-old, there’s no excuse” Michael’s mother Geraldine said.

The teenager said the same teacher threw a book at him last month.

Kankakee School District 111 Superintendent Dr. Genevra Walters told parents at a board meeting there’s absolutely nothing that any student can do to deserve having that word used against them. The board viewed the video and fired Donovan.
