(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Friends and relatives will gather Tuesday for the funeral of Kathy Byrne, the daughter of former Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne.
A trial lawyer who spent much of her practice on asbestos litigation, Kathy Byrne credited lawsuits for forcing companies to remove the carcinogen from their products.
The Tribune reports Byrne died last week at the age of 66 from complications of surgery to remove a blood clot.
She was in her 20s when her mother served as mayor and did not follow her into running for office, but she did support others who did.
Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn called Byrne a fierce guardian of her mother's legacy. Byrne's son described her as a very hard worker who cared a lot about justice for regular people.
The visitation and funeral will take place at St. Vincent de Paul.
