CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Morning storms are resulting in a frustrating start for holiday weekend travelers.
Due to thunderstorms moving through, the FAA has issued a ground stop at O’Hare Airport. All inbound and outbound flights are on hold. The ground stop is in place until 7:30 a.m.
As of 8:20 a.m., 15 flights have been cancelled at O'Hare.
The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) expects O'Hare to have one of its busiest Labor Day weekends in its history. They project 1.44 million passengers to file through the airport this weekend, forecasting Monday as the most crowded day.
At Midway Airport, the CDA projects more than 306,000 travelers for the next six days. Today is expected to be the busiest day at Midway.
The strong line of storms have since moved out of the Chicago area, but the National Weather Service anticipates additional showers and storms to hit southeast of I-55 this afternoon and tonight.
AccuWeather says we'll see more clouds than sun today, with temps reaching the upper 80s as well as high levels of humidity.
Today though looks to be the low point of the holiday weekend weather. Tomorrow, AccuWeather says there will be abundant sunshine and humidity will lessen.
Sunday is looking even better, with sunny and cooler conditions. AccuWeather says inland temps will hover around 80 degrees while the highs will only reach the mid 70s at the lakefront.
Labor Day should be picture perfect, AccuWeather says. Conditions will be splendid. There will be abundant sunshine, with temperatures in the 70s.
