BEACH PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two Waukegan men accused of taking part in the armed robbery of a store in Beach Park on Sunday night were arrested with the help of Lake County Sheriff’s K9s.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a business in the 37700 block of North Green Bay Road in Beach Park for an armed robbery. The owner of the business, a 52-year-old man, called 911 to report that a man entered the store with a firearm and took money from a cash register.
Upon arrival, deputies learned the offender fled on foot, while another man involved fled in a car.
Sheriff’s K9 Duke and Deputy Arrowood arrived at the scene and began an immediate track. The K9 followed a scent down the street, and according to police, found the getaway car stuck in a snowbank, approximately one block away.
A man was located in the driver’s seat, identified as Darrell D. Brown, 29, of Waukegan. Brown did not match the description of the offender, however, based on surveillance video obtained from the robbery, was likely the getaway driver, police said.
Additionally, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said the vehicle Brown was driving was stolen, as well as the registration affixed to the vehicle. Brown was also found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested without incident.
Following the arrest, Sheriff’s K9 Danno and Deputy Martini arrived to continue tracking the offender who committed the armed robbery.
While responding to the scene, police said Deputy Martini spotted the offender in the area of Northern Avenue and Yorkhouse Road in Beach Park. The offender ran into a wooded area, so Deputy Martini deployed K9 Danno to track the man.
The sheriff's office said K9 Danno located the man hiding near a shed in the 12400 block of West Paddock Avenue in Beach Park. The man, identified as 30-year-old Terrell Davis, of Waukegan, was initially noncompliant, police said, but surrendered after Danno began aggressively barking.
Davis was found to be in possession of proceeds of the robbery, along with a key to the stolen vehicle Brown was driving, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Martini and K9 Danno additionally found the firearm Davis used during the robbery.
Deputy Chief Chris Covelli recently told us K9s almost always track the suspects.

"I'll tell you, none of us want to get bit by one of our K9s," Covelli said.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said Davis had initially provided a false name to detectives, but his true identity was determined by his fingerprints. Davis was wanted by the Minnesota Department of Corrections for a parole violation regarding a previous sexual assault, and he was also listed as a non-compliant Minnesota sexual offender.
Davis has been charged with armed robbery, armed habitual criminal, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, obstructing justice, fugitive from justice, and resisting a peace officer.
Brown has been charged with aggravated DUI, unlawful possession of stolen registration, and no insurance.
“This is yet another tremendous example of the determination and dedication that our sheriff’s deputies and staff consistently display in our mission to keep our community safe. It also highlights the importance of our canine teams and their value to all of Lake County. I am very proud of everyone who brought this armed robbery investigation to an immediate resolution," said Sheriff John D. Idleburg in a statement.
Both Davis and Brown remain held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18.
