Lake County Sheriff's K-9 catches catalytic converter thief

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Lake County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit captured a man early Tuesday morning who was trying to steal catalytic converters from a used car lot in Beach Park.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the lot on Green Bay Road to check out what was reported as a suspicious person.

They said they found a guy trying to hide under a car who, when spotted, took off on foot, according to the sheriff’s office.

A canine named Duke arrived and was on his trail, soon having the man by the hand.

Oscar Ponce, 23, was treated by paramedics and was taken to jail. His alleged accomplices got away.

The sheriff’s office said the deputies found multiple car jacks and a saw on the lot.

They said the men were trying to steal catalytic converters.

The County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit has seven dogs, five veterans – Duke, Dax, Dano, Reiker and Boomer – and two new members. All were named by kids.

Deputy Chief Chris Covelli has said, you don’t want to be pursued or bitten by these dogs.
