CROWN POINT, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Lake County, Indiana’s newest minor league baseball team that will play in the independent Northern League had a naming ceremony Thursday.
"The Lake County... (Can we say the name?)...The Corn Dogs!"
The Lake County Corn Dogs will be playing at Legacy Fields in Crown Point. The name is the result of an online contest.
"I would like to call up and present two lifetime Lake County Corn Dogs season tickets to the winner of our naming contest, Mr. Rich Oesterle, of Cedar Lake, Indiana," said team owner Ralph Flores.
Oesterle: I'd like to say this is my Darren McGavin moment. You remember that moment in A Christmas Story when a major award had been announced, but we didn't know what it was? Well, this is much better than a leg lamp, I'd have to say...so go Corn Dogs!"
"We believe the name personifies the fun, competitive spirit and family atmosphere we will bring to Crown Point this summer," said team owner Ralph Flores.
Crown Point Mayor David Uran noted the team will help to make Crown Point a baseball destination.
The Northern League was formed in 1902, and has produced major league players, including some hall of famers.
