CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The family-owned Broadway Shoe Repair on Chicago’s North Side is shutting down after the loss of the family patriarch.

Broadway Shoe Repair is closing after 82 years in business because of the death of owner Dionysios “Dan” Kanellakis. He died after suffering a heart attack in the shop last week. Kanellakis was 59.

Customers have been pouring into the shop, located on Broadway near Belmont Avenue, to pick up orders and pay their respects.

The shop was opened in 1942 by George Kanellakis, Dan’s father.

No final date has been set for when Broadway Shoe Repair will close. Kanellakis’ family said they will be running the shop for the next few weeks.

The Kanellakis family has started a GoFundMe to help handle funeral costs as they close up the shop. Alexis Kanellakis, Dan’s daughter, said they were grateful for those who have reached out and those in the Lake View community who “have been showing their support to my family and I during this time.”

“My dad was loved by so many and was a staple in his community,” she wrote. “I’m finding that out more and more as people share their stories of him with us.”
