(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s Roman Catholic Cardinal says a Lake Zurich priest who was supposed to return to pulpit following a sexual-misconduct investigation will stay away from active ministry as new information is examined.

The Rev. David Ryan of St. Francis de Sales Parish and School was asked last year to step away as pastor after accusations arose that he sexually abused minors a quarter-century ago at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines.

Investigations by an Archdiocese of Chicago panel and state child-welfare officials determined the accusations were unfounded, and Ryan was given permission to return.

Cardinal Blase Cupich has now sent a letter to parishioners saying Ryan again will be stepping away. An Archdiocese spokesperson told WBBM Newsradio Thursday that a person recently made a statement in the case that must be evaluated.

Kevin Neenan, a parishioner who supports Ryan, said a mass welcoming Ryan back this week was packed with church members.

Neenan told WBBM Newsradio he's confident Ryan will be cleared.
