GARY, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A dog was rescued Tuesday after being spotted on the roof of an abandoned three-story building in Gary.

The picture looks surreal. A pit-mix is seen on top of a steep pitched roof.

A Lake County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the dog on the roof near 18th Street and Malcom X Drive. She called the fire department.

The Sheriff’s Office said they declined to help, citing safety, so Townsend Tree Company brought a bucket lift and got the dog safely off the roof.

It's unclear how the dog got up there. There are missing windows, and a couple would allow access to the roof, which, again, has a steep pitch.

Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. thanked everyone involved for their compassion.
