(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago caught a break Friday afternoon with a pause in the snowfall, but the next wave was expected overnight.
As much as 8 inches of snow fell by Friday morning, with the highest tallies in the northwest and southwest suburbs, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago. The highest reading was at a Hoffman Estates site, where 8.5 inches had fallen. By contrast, sites in west suburban Lombard and Wheaton had registered only 3 inches.
Meantime, rain and above-freezing temperatures offset accumulation of snow in some areas, including the city of Chicago.
It’s not quite over, NWS meteorologists said later Friday. Up to 2 inches of additional snow was expected late Friday or overnight, with winds of up to 45 miles per hour, making travel conditions treacherous.
Relief was expected by Saturday morning, up to a point. But temperatures were expected to begin plunging from the 20s into the single digits by Sunday.
