CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A lawsuit has been filed to stop apparent plans by the City of Chicago to open a facility to house migrants on the West Side.
The lawsuit claimed the City wants to turn an industrial building into housing for migrants in the West Town neighborhood near Grand and Western Avenues by Nov. 1.
Two West Town residents filed the suit in Cook County court and argued Mayor Brandon Johnson is wrongfully using his emergency powers to bypass zoning laws. The residents also said the migrants could become safety and health risks for the community.
Last week, opponents of new migrant housing for the Southwest Side's Brighton Park neighborhood protested plans to create a 10-acre tent encampment that could potentially house thousands of migrants. According to Chicago police, some of those protesters hit Ald. Julia Ramirez (12th) and one of her aides.
More than 19,000 people seeking asylum have arrived in Chicago in the past 15 months.
