(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Legal advocates filed an emergency petition with environmental regulators Monday on behalf of prisoners in Illinois.

The filing calls on the EPA to take emergency action to address what critics say is unsafe drinking water in state prisons.

“Our laws that protect people from pollution do not stop at the prison walls,” said Robert Weinstock, director of the Environmental Advocacy Center at Northwestern’s Pritzker School of Law.

Advocates for the incarcerated brought their concerns to the EPA’s downtown Chicago office. They say the agency has the authority and responsibility to act on the quality of drinking water.
