(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A coalition of attorneys and legal workers have written a letter to the City of Chicago expressing their concerns over demonstrators rights being trampled on during marches at the DNC.
In the letter, a coalition of 65 legal organizations raised concerns over how Mayor Johnson and CPD superintendent Larry Snelling planned to treat demonstrators protesting during the DNC.
The letter points to Chicago's history of police violence and other notable demonstrations including the Democratic National Convention of 1968.
The coalition warned against repeating history. Chicago's top cop agrees.
"1968 was 1968 and you know, we've, we've done our history, we planned around it and we've taken corrective action," Snelling said.
The letter raises concerns over Snellings comments so far leading up to the event questioning what they call “intimidating comments” and says they will hold CPD accountable.
“The First Amendment protections does not include rioting. It doesn't include criminal acts. It doesn't include breaking the law. It doesn't include violence, vandalism, those things that we are not going to tolerate in our city,” Snelling had previously said.
“If necessary, we will hold the CPD and other law enforcement agencies accountable should they eviscerate people’s constitutional rights. Please do not force us to do so,” the letter reads.
