Illinois state Sen Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, is moving from the Capitol's third floor to the governor’s office — and more than tripling his salary.

Gov. JB Pritzker on Monday said Manar will be a senior advisor on such issues as COVID-19 relief, appropriations and downstate economic development.

Manar is possibly best known during his time in the legislature as the point person for the new school funding formula.

The new job pays $278,000. His Senate salary, including a stipend for being a committee chairman, has been about $80,000.

Pritzker created a company to fund half the salaries of some of his top staffers, and that will include Manar.

Manar, a former chief of staff to the Senate president, has held local office in Bunker Hill and Macoupin County. His resignation is effective Jan. 17. His first day of his new job is Jan. 19.

Democratic county chairmen in the district — Christian, Macon, Macoupin, Madison, Montgomery, and Sangamon — will meet to select a new senator.

The announcement follows the Dec. 31 resignation of Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, whose district includes part of Springfield.
