HEBRON, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A police pursuit that ended with a car rolling over Tuesday on I-65 may have saved the life of the driver.
Indiana State Police said troopers and other officers tried to stop a car for traffic violations, and there was a pursuit that went for 15 miles on northbound I-65 starting at the Lowell exit and moving into Lake County.
The driver managing to avoid stop sticks placed at various locations; and as more were being placed across the lanes when, police said, the driver swerved hard and rolled over.
Video shot by someone passing by showed the car, a 2017 Nissan Maxima, upside down and numerous officers with their guns drawn.
The driver, who complained of pain in his rear-end, was taken to a hospital to be checked out before he was going to be taken to jail.
But, police said, as he was being checked out at an area hospital, doctors noticed what’s being described as “a serious preexisting condition that’s potentially life-threatening.”
So serious, he was not taken to jail, but was flown to a hospital in Chicago.
His decision to run from police may have saved his life, and his legal troubles have been put on hold while the health issue is addressed.
Indiana State Police said the identity of the driver is being withheld pending formal charges by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. Charges being submitted for consideration include resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of marijuana, and two counts of reckless driving.
