(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Advocates for the homeless say Chicago Mayor Lightfoot is running out the clock for getting a referendum on February's ballot.

Lightfoot had until 5 p.m. Thursday to post a public notice allowing a resolution on February's ballot that could bring millions of dollars in aid to those experiencing homelessness.

"In the city of Chicago, folks aren't getting those services right now," said Myron Byrd with Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.

He and supporters of the Bring Chicago Home Resolution met underneath the large clock hanging from the Macy's on State Street in the Loop. They told WBBM Newsradio that time is running out.

The initiative seeks to impose a 1.9% real-estate transfer tax on properties valued over $1 million. Revenue would go toward wraparound services for homeless individuals.

If the resolution does not go on the ballot this upcoming February it would be next possible in March 2024.
