(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council's Zoning Committee has given preliminary approval for what would be Lincoln Park's first cannabis dispensary.
Marigrow wants to open the dispensary in the 2500 block of North Lincoln Avenue, the site of the old Salt 'N Pepper Diner that closed in 2015.
There's some opposition in the neighborhood and some support.
The new alderman, Timmy Knudsen (43rd), is not opposing it. It would be a "social equity" license, meant for minority owners.
Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) asked Marigrow CEO Akele Parnell if he's the sole owner. Parnell said he's not. There are about five investors, but it's 100 percent minority owned.
Beale said he worries about non-minority backers hiding behind their supposed partners.
Then the Zoning committee approved the needed change for the project, and now it goes to the full City Council.
The dispensary will also need a Special Use Permit. So, it's far from a done deal.
