CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A newly released study on driving paints an ugly picture for Illinois.
The report from Bankrate.com ranked Illinois as the 11th worst state in the country for drivers.
“A lot of the Midwestern states fared very well in our rankings, except for Illinois” analyst Sarah Foster told WBBM Newsradio. “That was mostly because of drivers having poor road quality and spending a lot of time in congestion.”

Foster said the four key categories of the study were cost, such as things like gas and insurance prices, safety, driving quality and weather.
Though there is a bright spot for the Land of Lincoln.
“Illinois took the top spot for driving safety,” Foster said. “It was the number one safest state in the country.”
That’s due to low rates of arrests vehicle theft and DUI, and high rates of seatbelt use.
Foster said for drivers, the study can serve as a sign to cut back on time behind the wheel or shop around for new insurance. As for policy makers…
“This might be something for them to look at and see that this is a pretty big concern, especially for people who are in their jurisdiction, voting on decisions they make purely on their everyday experiences living somewhere.”
The best state for drivers, according to the study, Ohio. The worst? California.
