CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago racial justice organization will receive millions of dollars to help with their work in advancing racial equity.

The $10 million dollar grant awarded to Communities United for its partnership with Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's hospital is one of just five W.K. Kellogg Foundation Grants in the Global Challenge to Advance Racial Equity.

Laqueanda Reneau is a youth organizer with Communities United. She said the grant will allow them to reach out to about 3,000 youth to work through shared experiences and come up with solutions to help heal themselves and their communities.

"We’re dealing with violence. We’re dealing with the racial inequities of how they look at black and brown young men and women of color."

Dr. John Walkup, a child psychologist with Lurie's said young people are uniquely qualified to address the issues they're facing in Chicago and the impact on their mental health.

"We’re making it an intentional process of personal, family and community healing."
