CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Today is national nurses day and one pint-size cancer patient is more than happy to sing the praises of her favorite nurse.

6-year-old Averie Lazzara has been going to Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital for cancer treatments since she was two-years-old, and by her side the entire time, her favorite nurse, Ms. Jamie.

Ms. Jamie is Jamie Rogers, a pediatric outpatient nurse.

“She had my heart from day one,” Rogers said.

“Seeing these kids, going from scared and not wanting to be in (the) clinic to running through the waiting room to find their favorite nurse or their favorite doctor, it just means the world that we played a small part in that."

Averie's mom, Stacy, said the feeling was mutual.

“Averie had just taken to her and was fixated on Jamie and started pretending to be Nurse Jamie with her stuffed animals and baby dolls at home,” said Stacy Lazzara.

She added that Nurse Jamie’s loving care has played a key part in her daughter’s recovery.

“Jamie is just special. She is just one of a kind. She exudes warmth and positivity. I like to say she's kind of a hug in human form,” Stacy Lazzara said.

Lazzara said Averie, who's been cancer free for 18-months, now wants to be a nurse when she grows up. Nurse Jamie said that's the biggest compliment ever.
