The organizers of Lollapalooza are on the hook for several hundred thousand dollars for repair and restoration of Grant Park.

Returning the park to its pre-festival state is part of the deal and it varies from year-to-year, depending on the weather. In 2011, the most expensive year, the organizers paid more than a million dollars. There was heavy rain that year and fields were turned to mud.

This year’s total, according to the Chicago Tribune, is just under $410,000. That’s $120,000 more than last year. In 2019, the cost was $645,000.

Much of the work, including new sod, seed, shrubs and irrigation, has been completed.

Lollapalooza has a deal for another ten years in the park.

Some, including downtown Alderman Brendan Reilly, have been critical of the fact that parts of the park can’t be used for months after the festival. He’d like to see the organizers assist with a permanent flood-management system that would eliminate annual repairs.
