(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Long Grove’s village president said the the village’s famous covered bridge withstood yet another collision from a truck.

Bill Jacob on Monday said there was only "cosmetic damage” done when a U-Haul hit the front of the bridge’s cover Friday. It was at least the 14th time the cover has been hit since the bridge re-opened after a major repair last summer.

It starts to be "unbelievable" that crashes keep happening despite warning signs, Jacob said, but the damage has been pretty minor.

The driver’s insurance will cover the cost to repair damage from the most recent crash, he added.

A village committee has been looking into what else might be needed, in addition to the current signs, to try to prevent crashes into the covered bridge by vehicles that are taller than its 8 1/2-feet opening.

Luckily, the steel-framed bridge cover has done its job and prevented any serious damage from happening to the bridge itself, Jacob said.

The Long Grove village board meets this week, but Jacob says the covered bridge is not on the agenda.
