(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s Channel 11 has cancelled “Check, Please!” after 20 years.
The premise of the public television show was simple: Three people talked about restaurants they liked and hoped other people would try them, too.
When the show started in 2001, one of its first panelists in a taped, not-originally-aired show, was Barack Obama, then an Illinois state senator. He was stumping for Dixie Kitchen in Hyde Park, now closed.
The founder and creator of “Check, Please!” said in a statement Wednesday that he and Channel 11 “want to go in different directions” and a 20th season is “just not to be.”
Executive producer David Manilow said more than 35,000 people applied to be on the show over the years.
“Our little PBS show started with the premise that, if we can get diverse restaurant reviews from three different Chicagoans each week, people who are different from one another, who can offer different perspectives, we can provide our audience with a trusted tour of Chicago eateries and something truly honest and genuine,” he said.
