Longtime Wauconda High School teacher killed by suspected drunk driver

WHEELING (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A high school teacher from the northwest suburbs is dead following an accident early Sunday morning that was triggered by a suspected drunk driver.

Fifty-three-year-old Bob Gillen was traveling along East Palatine road in Wheeling  when a car swerved into oncoming traffic and hit his vehicle head-on. He was killed. A passenger in his car was seriously injured.

Police said the driver is suspected of being under the influence. Gillen had been a math teacher at Wauconda High School since 1996.

“Bob leaves a lasting legacy, and his loss will be felt throughout our community,” Wauconda Community Unit School District #118 wrote in a statement.
