CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A man who broke into Walgreens stores during looting that happened in May of 2020 in Chicago has been given a break by a federal judge.
Federal Judge Gary Feinerman sentenced 42-year-old William Lorenz to six months in a community confinement facility, like the Salvation Army.
According to the Sun-Times, Lorenz pleaded for a break so he could get help with his drug addiction, as well as care for his teenage son and elderly mother. He called his crime the “worst decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
The judge said had Lorenz not had a steady job and pleaded to care for his mother and son, he would have sentenced Lorenz to nine months behind bars.
Lorenz admitted he used a sledgehammer to break into a series of Walgreens during the May 2020 rioting and looting, while trying to steal to steal codeine syrup and OxyContin, but never found any. He also helped prosecutors by telling them who his partner was - Ivan Bermudez, who got a 15-month prison sentence.
