(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Officials at Loyola University say they’ve found a clean energy source to further the school's commitment to sustainability.

The school’s search for a clean energy source started in 2019. This led them to Swift Current Energy’s Double Black Diamond project in Central Illinois, says Loyola Director of Sustainability Aaron Durnbaugh.

They’ll purchase 81,660 megawatt hours of electricity. The 12-year agreement will not only contribute to the university's goal of carbon neutrality by 2025, but will also save the school money, Durnbaugh said.

"It gives us some price assurance -- you know, what the price that we're going to pay for those electrons as they get passed through,” he said.

Double Black Diamond is expected to start producing renewable electricity in late 2024.
