(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Tim Mapes, once known as the gatekeeper to longtime Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan, received his sentence Monday following his August 2023 conviction of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Mapes, 69, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in federal prison.

Prosecutors accused Mapes of lying under oath to a grand jury by trying to protect Madigan with a series of “I do not recall” answers to questions about Madigan and his boss’ trusted advisor Mike McClain.

During sentencing, the judge said Mapes’ loyalty was gravely misguided, and the people of this state cry out for accountability.

Mapes will report to prison in June to begin his sentence, the judge said.

Although Madigan’s racketeering trial was previously scheduled to begin on April 1, U.S. District Judge John Robert Blakey granted the former speaker’s request to delay his trial earlier this year. The new date is Oct. 8.

Madigan was accused of leading a “criminal enterprise” for nearly a decade, one that was designed to enhance his political power and generate income for his allies and associates.

His trial is expected to be the biggest public corruption trial at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse since the trials of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
