CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Very few of the asylum seekers who have arrived in Chicago over the past 16 months are able to work legally.
More than 14,000 migrants are currently living in shelters set up by Chicago. Over half are nearing the City-imposed 60-day limit on a shelter stay, which will arrive on Feb. 1, 2024.
As of Monday, roughly 27,000 migrants have arrived in the City.
Data obtained by CBS 2 suggests that just 1% of the new arrivals have received work permits.
Applications have been processed for about 1,500 people, according to Chicago's figures. Work permits have been provided to 284 people, and 279 have received Social Security cards.
