CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago’s 9-1-1 Center and the City Colleges are teaming up for a new Emergency Management training program.

The course is called Introduction to Emergency Management. It’s a partnership between Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication and Malcolm X College.

OEMC Deputy Director Dionne Tate said the course is designed to educate people about the duties and job opportunities at the agency.

“Obviously we do have an intensive training program here at the OEMC for our new hires. But, this partnership with Malcom X and OEMC is a first-time thing, and it is so wonderful, so exciting because we get an opportunity to have people come in and learn about OEMC and understand what it is that we really do,” Tate said.

Tate said her agency’s current trainers will teach the Introduction to Emergency Management Course. She said people know a lot about jobs with the police department, but they may not know about opportunities at OEMC. Besides 9-1-1 dispatchers, there are traffic control people, 3-1-1 operators and coordinators for events and emergencies, among other jobs.

The course costs $385, but some could be eligible for the fee to be waived. Some jobs at OEMC start at $50,000 a year, and require a high school diploma.
