(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Authorities say a 54-year-old man in the southwest suburbs stole two vehicles, but they weren’t cars or SUVs.

"I've never seen anything like this or even heard anything like this. Very peculiar,” says Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes, who’s been in law enforcement for 42 years.

When Elwood Police came upon 54-year-old Michael Honiotes of Morris last week, he had stolen a dump truck and a golf cart, Hayes said.

"And he was actually in the process of trying to lift the golf cart up into the dump truck,” he said.

Chief Hayes says Honiotes told the officer he shouldn’t have stolen the vehicles.

"I would say no, he's not a golfer,” Hayes said about a motive. “I think he's basically an opportunist that was out riding around in a large vehicle and saw an opportunity where he thought he could get away with stealing probably anything that wasn't tied down."

Bond was set at $15,000 for Honiotes. Nor further information was available.
