JOHNSBURG (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man is in custody following an hours-long police standoff at a far northwest suburban home.
The stalemate in Johnsburg began late Tuesday night when police responded to a call of shots fired inside a home on Filmore Road near Hamlin Drive. There, officers found a man suffering a mental health crisis. Police Chief Jason Greenwald the man then subsequently barricaded himself inside the home.
Officers were able to safely remove a female resident from the home, but the standoff with the suspect continued into the morning.
McHenry County Sheriff’s SWAT team were deployed to the scene, surrounding the perimeter of the home, Greenwald said. Several hours of negotiations ended with police entering the home and taking into custody safely. He was then transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. Greenwald said no shots were fired during the standoff.
Charges are pending.
Police will continue to investigate the incident, but said there is no active threat for the public.
The SWAT situation and subsequent shelter in place order resulted in Johnsburg School District 12 canceling all in-person classes for Wednesday.
