CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The intentions of an Iowa man, who was caught with a semi-automatic rifle in a hotel room overlooking the Ohio Street Beach, remain unclear; and his legal troubles didn’t appear to be of concern when he was released on bond.
Keegan Casteel, 32, of Ankeny, Iowa, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after a member of the cleaning staff at the W Hotel "likely prevented a tragedy from happening," according to Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown.
That person alerted police to the semi-automatic rifle and four magazines, along with another gun.
Casteel’s girlfriend was staying at the W Chicago - Lakeshore with him. Their hotel room was on the 12th floor overlooking Ohio Street Beach.
In court, a prosecutor said Casteel has an Iowa gun permit. But a judge told him, "clearly, we are not in Iowa." The weapons recovered remain in police custody.
When Casteel was released after posting $10,000 bond, he proposed to his girlfriend outside the 18th District police station.
ABC 7 Chicago reported it appears she accepted, before they drove away without comment. His next court date is currently unknown.
