South suburban man charged for using insect killer spray on police during Jan. 6 Capitol riot

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A south suburban man is at least the 42nd person from Illinois to be charged for taking part the January 6th Capitol attack nearly 3 years ago.

Court documents citing body camera footage state that William Lewis, 57 of Burbank used wasp and hornet killer spray on police officers on three separate occasions during the riot.

This caused burning sensations for at least one officer. Lewis then threw the empty canister at them.

He faces felony charges of assaulting law enforcement and misdemeanors for disorderly conduct, who was was identified last year through an FBI webpage showing images from footage taken that day.

Nationally, over 1,200 people have been charged in relation to the breach of the U.S. Capitol.
