Man charged in crash that killed couple who just graduated from Schaumburg High School

HOFFMAN ESTATES (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An Elgin man has been charged in the crash that killed two recent high school graduates this past weekend.

Hoffman Estates police said 32-year-old Deni Rubio is charged with aggravated DUI resulting in death, reckless homicide, and attempting to disarm a police officer.

Eighteen-year-old Amelia Mazeikis was driving her longtime boyfriend  D'Shaun Tudela in to work Saturday morning when they were involved in a crash at Higgins and Barrington Roads.

“Thankfully, they had each other, and that brings a little bit of peace, knowing that he wasn’t alone when he passed and that they had each other, but at the same time, I know I can’t wake up tomorrow and expect him to call me,” Tudela’s mother, Crystal, told CBS-2.

Mazeikis and Tudela were recent graduates of Schaumburg High School.

The school will be offering grief counseling starting today to any student who needs it.
