(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 62-year-old Palatine man has been charged in the Jan. 20 hit-and-run collision on Chicago’s Northwest Side that killed a retired police officer.

Richard Haljean, 57, was fatally struck by a vehicle around 6:15 p.m. as he crossed Touhy Avenue near Oriole in Edison Park. The vehicle -- a Jeep -- did not stop, authorities said.

On Wednesday, Chicago police announced that a suspect had been arrested and charged. Ted Plevritis faces charges of reckless homicide; failure to report a fatal accident and aggravated use of a communication device that resulted in death.

Plevritis was arrested Wednesday in the 2400 block of West Belmont Avenue, Chicago Police said. He is expected to appear in bond court Thursday.

Haljean, a father of three, retired from the police in 2020 after serving for nearly 30 years. He was pronounced dead at Resurrection Hospital.
