BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A scheme that cost Bloomingdale Township nearly a million dollars has landed a participant behind bars.
A federal jury has convicted Mario Giavannini, an excavation company employee of paying kickbacks to Robert Czernek, Commissioner of the Bloomingdale Township Road District in exchange for approving $300,000 in fraudulent invoices for purported road work.
He's accused of approving payment for things like stone delivery and dumped leveling to Bulldog Earth Movers Inc., despite the fact that much of the work was never done.
Investigators said the two would leave handwritten notes in predetermined places to complete the fraudulent invoices. Giavannini has been found guilty on 14 counts of wire fraud. Sentencing is set for September.
