Man dies, firefighter hurt in Hammond house fire

HAMMOND, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A house fire early Tuesday morning in Hammond left one person dead and a firefighter injured.

The fire occurred in a one-story wood frame home on the 7200 block of Lindberg Avenue at about 4 a.m. Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire. During a search there was a partial floor collapse.

A firefighter who fell through had to be rescued. Firefighters found the body of a person inside the home.

The injured firefighter was being treated for burns at Loyola Medical, according to Fire Chief Jeffery Smith, and is in good condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
