CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 20-year-old Ford City man who hit and killed a woman with his car while fleeing a traffic stop on the South Side said he was afraid of being arrested.
Isaac Wade has been charged with reckless homicide in the death of 43-year-old Lakisel Thomas.
The mother of three was walking when she was fatally hit by a car Monday morning at 74th and Racine in Englewood.
Wade was free on bond in a 2017 attempted murder case, when he was stopped by police at 71st and Racine for failure to display registration.
Prosecutors said he drove off as officers got out of the car. Cameras and vehicle black box information indicated he was driving at speeds of 70 to 80 mph when he blew a red light at 74th Street and Racine and struck a Jeep, before crashing into Thomas.
Three adults in the Jeep had minor injuries and went to St. Bernard Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital, police said.
Thomas, a pedestrian, was also taken to an area hospital where she later died.
The squad car was going 30 mph and was not engaged in the chase.
Wade and a passenger were arrested after running from the crash, police said. The passenger was released without charges.
Friends of Thomas said she was a hardworking mother, who was walking to pick up food for her son at the time of the crash.
