CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Illinois man with ties to LaSalle County has been arrested and accused of taking part in the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.
The charges against Mathew Capsel came several days ago. He was arrested just this week in southern Illinois.
Federal authorities say they examined social-media posts after witnesses told them Capsel had taken part in the disturbance in Washington as Congress sought to certify the 2020 presidential election results.
Capsel can be seen pushing against National Guard troops that are trying to secure the Capitol, an FBI agent says in an affidavit. Capsel is seen being pepper-sprayed.

He is accused of assaulting a member of the armed forces and obstructing law enforcement.
Court documents show the feds were tipped off by a former neighbor and by a friend on social media. One witness told authorities Capsel is "known to be violent."
