(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Bartlett man has been found guilty but mentally ill in the 2019 stabbing death of his mother, prosecutors announced.
DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin rendered his verdict Friday in the case of 69-year-old Edward Mitzelfeld following a seven-day bench trial that concluded last month.
Authorities say Mitzelfeld in May 2019 fatally stabbed his 93-year-old mother, Frances Kelly, in the kitchen of the home they shared and then called 9-1-1. He reportedly met police officers in the front yard with his hands raised.
“This is a tragic case that has surely taken a tremendous toll on Frances’ and Edward’s entire family,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release announcing the verdict.
Mitzelfeld, who has been in custody since his mother’s death, is next due in court on May 10, officials said.
