(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Four months after a man, convicted of the 1995 murder of a high school basketball star from Aurora, was released from prison, prosecutors in DeKalb County have charged that man with attempted murder.

Prosecutors say Leo Navar served nearly 30 years in prison for the shooting death of Moshe Rogers. The Aurora Central Catholic High School basketball star was driving home from a game when the shooting happened. Navar was 17 at the time.

Sycamore Deputy Police Chief Joseph Meeks says this week, Navar attacked his girlfriend and her adult son in an apartment they shared on Fairland Drive.

Meeks says Navar attacked the son, when he tried to defend his mother.

“There was a battery taking place, in which Mr. Navar was attacking his mother. So the victim intervened. Following that intervention was when Mr. Navar allegedly attacked the victim.”

Meeks says Navar was charged by prosecutors with attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery.

A judge ordered Navar to remain in custody as he awaits trial.
