CHICAGO (AP) -- Police say a man who was apparently ambushed after being released from the Cook County Jail in Chicago suffered as many as 64 bullet wounds to his head and other parts of his body.
A police report says the shooting Saturday night killed 31-year-old Londre Sylvester.
The report says Sylvester had just been released after being fitted for electronic monitoring and was walking to a waiting vehicle when several suspects "exited two separate vehicles and all began to shoot in Sylvester's direction, striking him numerous times.”
The suspects re-entered their vehicles and fled. The killing comes amid a rise in shootings this year in Chicago and broader concerns nationwide about increasing violence.
Two women were injured by gunfire in the ambush attack.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Sylvester was a drill rapper who performed as KTS Dre and Kutthroat Dreko.
A woman who had gone to the jail to visit a detainee Saturday said she heard what she thought were fireworks going off as she talked with another visitor at the entrance to a parking lot a block south.
“We were talking from car to car and I looked at her and said, ‘Those sounded really close,” she told the Sun-Times. “Moments later, I heard two pops in front of the visiting area, then more in a cadence that couldn’t be anything but gunshots.”
