(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 50-year-old Woodstock man has entered guilty pleas in a 2019 hammer attack on two women at a northwest suburban bicycle path, McHenry County prosecutors said.

Angel Cardoza earlier this week pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated battery, State’s Attorney Patrick D. Kenneally said in a news release.

The charges stem from a violent incident Sept. 24, 2019 on the Ridgefield Trace bicycle path in Crystal Lake.

A local woman was walking home when Cardoza approached her and struck her repeatedly on the head with a hammer, authorities said.

When a second woman who was a passerby began yelling that she was calling 9-1-1, Cardoza rushed her and struck her on the arm with the hammer before he fled, officials said.

Attempted murder can yield a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, prosecutors said. Cardoza is to be sentenced in September.
